This Ngāi Tūhoe design honours my whānau of the mist, inspired by the purākau of Maungapōhatu and Hinepūkohurangi. This piece, Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngā Tamariki o te Kohu, reflects my deep connection to these purākau and to my tūpuna.
As a boy, growing up not only in Hawke's Bay but also in Waimana, I’ve always been captivated by the mist descending over the valley. To me, it is a reminder of my tūpuna, descending from Maungapōhatu to settle in Waimana. Maungapōhatu represents strength and beauty—an enduring symbol in our whakapapa.
The purākau shared by my older cousin about our maunga have further deepened my understanding and pride in our tūpuna. I look forward to continuing my journey of learning, not only about my Ngāti Raka whānau but also the broader Tūhoe nation.
